Whenever you make a big, long-term purchase like a car, ongoing maintenance and upkeep have to be considered. We know petrol and diesel cars cost roughly £1300 a year to fuel and fix annually, but what about electric vehicles (EVs)? Are they just as expensive to keep on the road? Does all that slick new engineering cost more to maintain?&nbsp;The truth is EV owners pay half as much on average to service their cars as internal combustion engine (ICE) owners.&nbsp;Why do EV drivers pay so much less than their petrol peers? Let’s take a look.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">How often do EVs need to be serviced?&nbsp;</h2>Like any machine in regular use, electric vehicles need occasional maintenance and periodic repairs. However, compared to petrol and diesel cars, the annual repair bill is much easier to manage.&nbsp;EVs typically require a twice-annually service check for onboard systems and tire rotations. These checks ensure the battery is maintaining optimal performance and the car is running as it should.&nbsp;After 8 to 10 years when the manufacturer warranty expires, that’s when to expect a sizeable bill for battery replacement. At current prices, a new EV battery can cost between £4,000 and £8,000. In time however, industry analysts expect the price of battery technology to drop significantly as mass production finds new efficiencies and cost-effective innovations.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Why do EVs cost so much less to service?&nbsp;</h2>Electric cars eliminate monthly spending on petrol fill-ups and reduce the amount of carbon being sent into the atmosphere. They also come with other built-in savings over ICE cars.&nbsp;EVs have only a fraction of the moving parts that ICE vehicles do. That naturally reduces maintenance and repair costs over the lifetime of the car because there are fewer parts subject to constant friction, pressure, and stress. There are no oil changes to factor in, no spark plugs that need replacing, and no expensive emissions controllers like catalytic converters to worry about. And did we mention the savings on petrol? Most UK drivers spend about £1200 annually to fuel their cars.&nbsp;Electric cars also use a system called ‘regenerative’ braking, which allows the car to recover energy when the vehicle slows down and send it back into the battery. That provides an instant boost to EVs energy efficiency, and it dramatically reduces wear and tear on mechanical braking systems, reducing the need for new brakes, pads, and calipers over time.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Smart maintenance&nbsp;</h2>Electric car manufacturers like BMW and Hyundai are creating “smart maintenance” systems within the vehicles to guide when maintenance happens and what needs fixing. They’ve realised that EVs come with so many sensors and data capture opportunities that the car itself can tell you when it needs servicing. At some point in the future, smart maintenance may even replace manufacturer-mandated service schedules, ensuring that drivers get their cars to the shop when required but also ensuring that only the components that need attention are replaced, rather than rely on an arbitrary schedule to replace everything on a pre-set list.&nbsp;For drivers, an electric car service is much the same experience as an ICE car service. You still have to make an appointment, take the car in, let a mechanic give it a thorough check-through, fix any issues, then return to the garage to collect it. Only qualified EV mechanics, however, can service an electric vehicle.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">What does an EV service visit involve?&nbsp;</h2>If your car doesn't have smart maintenance capability, then regularly scheduled manufacturer service visits are a must. Many of the elements are the same as you'd have with an ICE vehicle, like checking steering, brakes, suspension, tyres, and lights. Of course, EVs also have their own particular systems to consider:&nbsp;Checking on exterior charging cables and charging points. Any damage to these or malfunction could slow down charging or stop the battery from charging at all.&nbsp;Visually inspecting all internal high-voltage connections and cables. Damaged internal cables could also create issues that affect charging&nbsp;Wheel rotations to identify indications of brake binding. This occurs when EV brake pads fail to release properly, which mechanics call “binding” of the discs. If it happens it will affect braking distance and steering control.&nbsp;Checking coolant levels for the inverter. In EVs this is an essential check because coolant regulates the electric motor temperature.&nbsp;Finally, EV mechanics will download all diagnostic data from the EV’s onboard computer and analyse it for performance issues.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Greener, and cheaper (long term)&nbsp;</h2>When it comes to annual servicing, electric cars are the cheapest on the market.&nbsp; Their relative lack of moving parts is a real benefit compared to ICE vehicles. On the other hand, they cost as much and sometimes more than their ICE equivalents, depending on the make and model.&nbsp;Just like any car, it is important to have EVs serviced at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals in order to drive them safely and meet required standards. In some cases, electric cars let you go longer between service visits than a petrol or diesel car. In other cases, the manufacturer might recommend a more frequent servicing schedule. Check before you buy and factor that into your overall monthly driving budget.&nbsp;

A full third of Brits report that they’re finding it hard to keep up with their normal household expenses.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you’re in that position, a large and unexpected bill for car repairs could be a real problem. Try as we might, not everyone has savings packed away for a rainy day.&nbsp;If your car needs transmission work or repairs to the engine or cylinders, you could easily find yourself staring down a £3,000 to £5,000 bill.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">What are your car repair financing options?&nbsp;</h2>If your auto repair bill is more than you expected and you can't afford to pay it, here are six things you can do.<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">1. Ask if there's a cheaper alternative</h2>If the estimate you’ve received for a repair job is surprisingly high, ask the mechanic if there’s a less-expensive option available.&nbsp;That doesn’t have to mean cutting corners or risking further problems later. Sometimes an estimate is based on certain part brands and the highest hourly labour rate. With a bit of flexibility, the garage might be able to use cheaper parts or find a workaround to cut down the cost.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">2. Do the repairs in phases&nbsp;</h2>If the service centre is recommending you do a series of repairs, ask if you can prioritise them and do only the most crucial fixes first. That could mean leaving your car at the garage until the bill is fully paid. Not every seller is 100% honest and others might not know a car’s full history. What you don’t want is to be stuck with something that’s going to need <a href="https://www.bumper.co.uk/">expensive repairs</a>.In this blog post we’ll show what to watch out for and the questions you need to ask when considering a used car purchase.<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Buying from a user car dealer</h2>If you’re buying from a used car dealer, it's important to spend some time finding out if the company is well established and has a good reputation locally.If you’re on the lot, look for a sign indicating the dealer is part of a trade association like the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) or Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA). You might also look for a framed certificate or signage committing to the Motor Ombudsman's code of practice. In both cases you’ll have the option of making a complaint through the trade association if you're not happy with the purchase.<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Buying from an auction</h2>Because they move around, auctions can be the least safe way to buy a used car. While most auctioneers are squeaky clean, if you do decide to cancel the sale, seek a refund or return the vehicle, you probably won’t have the legal protections a dealer could provide or the option to seek redress through an industry body's complaints procedure.At minimum, read the small print. Look at the auction house’s terms and conditions carefully before placing your bid.<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Research the car’s history</h2>Going through a few simple checks will minimise the chances of buying a car that’s undergone major repairs or is being sold illegally. You should also try and find out if the current owner has an outstanding lien or still owes money on the car.Here’s how you do it:&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Check the car’s history with the DVLA</h3>Use the DVLA’s free online vehicle information search to be certain that what the seller has told you matches the DVLA’s records. Ask for the car’s registration number, MOT test number, mileage, and confirm the make and model.&nbsp;If minor details don’t match up, ask the seller for clarification as it may just be an error.&nbsp; But if you discover something that makes you suspicious of the whole transaction, trust your instincts and walk away from the deal.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Check the car’s MOT and inspection history</h3>Every car has to undergo a regular MOT test to ensure its road safe. Check the MOT history of a car on GOV.UK. When looking at a used car, check that MOT inspections have taken place regularly throughout the car’s lifespan. If a car is more than three years old, for example, an MOT test has to be conducted every year.If there are any gaps, ask the seller what happened.&nbsp; If you aren't happy with the answer, then walk away from the deal.<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Invest in a private history check</h3>As a final step its worth paying the £20 fee for a private history check or data check on the car. It can uncover valuable information about any serious problems the car might have. For example, you’ll find out if the seller still owes money on the car, if the car has been reported stolen, if it's been written off and then repaired, and if the mileage reading on the odometer is correct.Car history checks are available online.<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Take a test drive and do an inspection</h2>Always schedule your first viewing so you can see the car in daylight and not after a rainstorm. It’s harder to see any scratches or other damage to a car’s exterior if its wet. It’s buying from a private seller, try and meet at the seller’s house so you have an accurate record of their address.That done, always take a used car for a test drive before buying. Listen for rattles and squeaks, and be aware of any resistance when you're steering. Let the car ‘glide’ from time to time to see if tends to veer to the left or right.To do a test drive you need to be sure you have the correct insurance cover. Check with your insurance provider to see if your policy covers driving someone else’s car.<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Still not sure? Get an independent report</h2>If, after all that, you're still not convinced, the best thing to do is probably walk away and look elsewhere.However, if the car really feels like it might be the one, you can wipe away your lingering doubts by having an independent report done on the car. The best way to buy a used car

It’s been an interesting two-year stretch for the UK car industry. Shifting trends in automotive buying means this year’s list of the top 10 cars could surprise some industry observers.&nbsp;With COVID-19 upending supply chains, ongoing semiconductor shortages, and the Ukraine invasion set to disrupt production further, 2022 is hard to predict. But there are some signs of what’s to come.&nbsp;The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) says that more than 174,000 cars were sold in the UK as of 1st March 2022. That’s a 23 per cent increase over the same period last year. Electric cars are also on the rise, jumping 150 per cent and accounting for nearly 15 per cent of all new car sales.&nbsp;Diesel, on the other hand, looks to be on the way out. Sales sank by a whopping 45 per cent from the same period last year, accounting for just over five per cent of total sales.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some things have stayed the same though. The Vauxhall Corsa leads the pack again this year in terms of individual model sales, while the Kia Sportage sits in second place and the Mini Hatchback holds the third spot on the podium.&nbsp;While there’s still lots of time for things to change, here’s our list of the top 10 cars for 2022 based on the most recent figures.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">The top 10 UK cars of 2022&nbsp;</h2><h3 style="margin-left:0px;">10. Ford Focus&nbsp;</h3>Perennial favourite Ford Focus fell out of many top 10 lists last year, disappearing from the top ten off the back of a poor reception to its Vignale version. That said, the Focus is enjoying a bit of a renaissance in early 2022 ahead of an expected design facelift in June.&nbsp;The Focus has always been a critic’s darling and the 2021 model is typically rated on par with cars like the Volkswagen Golf.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">9. Volvo XC40&nbsp;</h3>This one’s been a regular feature on dealer forecourts since early 2018 and holds firm as a favourite with both reviewers and car buyers alike.&nbsp;It's worth noting that both the petrol and plug-in hybrid models have had a better critical reception than the XC40 ‘pure’ electric model. They're seen to offer better value for money than their EV cousin.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">8. Toyota Corolla&nbsp;</h3>Oddly enough the Toyota Corolla is only the second car on this list to be built here in Blightly. While it dropped out of the SMMT’s top ten in February, strong sales figures in January have kept it aloft for the year-to-date.&nbsp;The Corolla comes as a hybrid-only and it's been gradually finding a firm niche in the UK new car marketplace. Many reviewers have noted how much of an improvement it represents over the former Auris, which it replaced on Toyota’s 2021 roster.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">7. Hyundai Tucson&nbsp;</h3>Hyundai’s new Tucson has been a top sales performer and frequent fixture in many ‘best of lists’ since it launched in 2021. The good news and sales keep coming as SMMT figures indicate a strong start to 2022.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">6. Vauxhall Mokka&nbsp;</h3>The Vauxhall Mokka is the first car to feature Vauxhall’s ‘Vizor’ styling. Based on strong sales for the Mokka you can expect the firm’s new look to roll out across its range over the next few years.&nbsp;The Mokka comes in standard petrol and diesel models. There’s also the all-electric Mokka-e, which numerous awards last year in the Small SUV category.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">5. Kia Niro&nbsp;</h3>This one's been around a long time, but Kia’s legacy brand Niro shows no signs of losing steam. Strong sales in January and February suggest that the Korean car maker is doing just fine in sustaining a reliable supply of semiconductor chips for the car’s onboard systems.&nbsp;While we expect the current Niro to come to the end of its production life soon, Niro enthusiasts can look forward to an all-new model reaching British shores in the second half of this year.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">4. Ford Puma&nbsp;</h3>The Puma is another top performer, but its popularity began to wane at the end of 2021 after a sales surge in the first quarter. It's a similar picture so far for 2022, with strong sales in January followed by a slight dip in February.&nbsp;Car reviewers continue to heap praise on the Puma and give it top ratings in the ‘supermini’ SUV class.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">3. Mini hatch&nbsp;</h3>A strong showing in the first two months of 2022 suggests the Mini hatch could keep burning up the sales charts. It finished last year ranked third overall and has started this year strongly as well. It’s also the best-selling new car that’s made in the United Kingdom.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">2. Kia Sportage&nbsp;</h3>The Sportage fell back to second place after a slow start to the year, all but vanishing from the UK sales charts in January. Will the next round of industry figures push it back to the top, or will supply chains problems prove too much for growing consumer demand?&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">1. A regular car service is a mechanical check-up carried out at set intervals, usually at least once a year or after the car has racked up enough miles on the clock. The manufacturer specifies the timescale and provides a standard list of services for mechanics to follow.&nbsp;&nbsp;If the car is still under warranty, then the interval and services will be mandatory. If it's out of warranty, then there’s more flexibility in the timing and services performed — though for the sake of your car you should keep as close to the recommended schedule as you can.&nbsp;A scheduled service will replace old fluids and ageing parts and include visual inspections to make sure key components are working as they should.&nbsp;&nbsp;There are three different types of scheduled car service: interim, full and major. While different service centres might brand their service packages differently for marketing purposes, there will always be three levels and a tiered pricing structure to choose from.&nbsp;Each service level builds on the previous one and then adds extras that the car needs at different stages of its life on the road. The type of service you need depends on how much time has passed or how much driving you’ve done since the last scheduled service.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">The three care service levels explained&nbsp;</h2><h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Interim car service&nbsp;</h3>An interim car service is the basic service bundle designed for high-mileage car owners who drive 20,000 miles or more annually. In their case, a single annual service may not be enough.&nbsp;An interim car service will normally wrap in an oil and oil filter change, plus a visual inspection of the car's essential exterior components, such as the tyres, lights, and windscreen wipers.&nbsp;Also included in an interim service bundle will be a topping-up of the engine, brake, and other key fluids; an inspection for any fluid leaks, and lubrication of all moving parts.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Full car service&nbsp;</h3>A full service, sometimes called an intermediate service, is often scheduled for every 12 months or whenever 12,000 miles is chalked-up on the odometer. It's designed for drivers with lower annual mileages and only needs one service a year.&nbsp;It comes with a wider range of replacement parts and visual checks, adding on to those conducted in the last interim service. It's typically recommended every 24,000 miles or 24 months. The age of a car is obviously a major factor.&nbsp;&nbsp;Newer cars usually have fewer problems and the manufacturer’s warranty limits the cost in the first few years. Older cars are often out of warranty and the added wear &amp; tear from more years on the road means <a href="https://www.bumper.co.uk/">the cost of service and repairs</a> goes up.&nbsp;&nbsp;And not every year is the same. You'll spend more in a year when your car has had a breakdown or is scheduled for major service, less in years when only minor services are due.&nbsp;To help you navigate the wide range of costs and price tags out there we’ve analysed the top search engine results British car services and calculated the average prices you should expect.&nbsp;&nbsp;Here’s how it breaks down:&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">What are the different levels of car service?&nbsp;</h2>There are normally three levels of regularly scheduled car service: interim, full, and major. Manufacturers set different intervals for each one based on the age or mileage of the vehicle.&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li>Interim is usually recommended every six months of 6,000 miles&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Full service is usually recommended every 12 months or 12,000 miles&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>Major service is usually recommended every 24 months or 24,000 miles&nbsp;</li></ul>The manufacturer draws from analysis of all the vehicles of your type it has on the road. It uses repair and breakdown data to determine when you should bring the car in to the shop and what parts and fluids need looking at.&nbsp;&nbsp;As the car gets older, naturally things start to break down. Scheduled service is meant to address common issues before they turn into a problem.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">How much do scheduled service tiers cost?&nbsp;</h2>As the time and replacement parts required by the mechanic go up as you move up the three levels, so does the cost. Here are the factors that determine how much time and effort servicing will take:&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Engine size&nbsp;</h3>Cars with an engine size smaller than two litres will usually be less expensive to service. High-performance cars with larger engines and more expensive components will cost more. Electric vehicles and some plug-in hybrids often need specialist servicing, which comes at a higher hourly rate.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Make &amp; model&nbsp;</h3>Popular cars like the Vauxhall Corsa and Kia Sportage will typically be in the lower price range for servicing since so many of them are on the road.&nbsp; Parts are cheap and readily available and their simpler design means they’re generally faster and easier to fix.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Warranty status&nbsp;</h3>If a car’s warranty cover is still in place, the cost of a scheduled service will be capped by the policy. Of course, to sustain the warranty's validity you have to stick to the prescribed service schedule. Skipping or putting off a scheduled service to save money isn't really an option.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">What do different car services cost?&nbsp;</h2>Looking at the search engine results for UK car services we've been able to come up with these average prices. For reference, we assumed a 2019 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa SXi with 42,000 miles on the odometer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Cost of an oil change&nbsp;</h3>Changing engine oil and filter is usually part of an interim service, but you can also buy it as a standalone service. The average oil change and filter price was £61. Depending on the quality of engine oil and size of your engine, that price could go up.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Cost of an interim service&nbsp;</h3>The average cost of an interim service is around £96, with service centres including an average 35 checks in their interim service.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Cost of a full service&nbsp;</h3>The average cost of a full car service is currently around £158. Garages bundled in an average 53 checks in their full service.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Cost of a major service&nbsp;</h3>Not every garage offers a major service so lack of supply tends to push up the price. From those garages that do offer major car service, the average price was £219 for about 62 checks on average.&nbsp;<h2 style="margin-left:0px;">Cost of an MOT</h2>The price of a class four MOT, required for passenger vehicles that have seating capacity for eight passengers, Westminster limits the cost to £54.85 maximum. Beneath that level the price of an MOT can change significantly from one garage to the next. In some of our searches we found MOT prices as low as £20 when booked at the same time as an interim, full, or major service. Dealerships tend to charge more and most price an MOT at the maximum £54.85.&nbsp;<h3 style="margin-left:0px;">Cost of a combined MOT with service&nbsp;</h3>Since many garages offer discounts and package deals for booking an MOT together with an interval service, it makes sense to have your car serviced and get the MOT done all in one go. You’ll cut down on time without your car and save money on the overall price of a combined service.&nbsp;&nbsp;Even if the garage doesn’t offer discount, consider doing your MOT whenever your next scheduled service is due. Bumper joined National Park Rangers in woodland near Calver for a unique day of volunteering. The team worked together to collect hundreds of vintage glass bottles and ceramics that were found when the site was recently cleared due to Ash Dieback Disease. It's believed that the area was on the site of an old Victorian tip.The Team found old Heinz bottles and Bovril glasses. Items that looked of interest were sent to archaeologists for analysis.It was important for the team to clear this glass to protect the safety of the wildlife and members of the public with four-legged friends who enjoy what the Peak District has to offer. With the cost of owning a car skyrocketing, new research conducted by vehicle repairs service<a href="http://www.bumper.co.uk">&nbsp;www.bumper.co.uk</a> has found that, of those who needed repairs, UK drivers spent an average of £803 last year on car repairs.The research asked 2,320 UK drivers over the age of 18 if they have needed vehicle repairs in the last 12 months. Almost two thirds (64%) of those questioned said they did have to fork out for repairs in past 12 months, with an average cost of £803 (the lowest repair cost stated was just £37, while the highest was £1,796).The latest National Travel Survey conducted by the Department for Transport* estimated that they are approximately 35.9m driving licence holders in the UK. When multiplied by the average cost that drivers admit spending in the past year on vehicle repairs, this would mean that drivers who required motor repairs in the past year collectively spent an estimated £18.5bn.The results found that the below cities were home to the motorists who had to shell out the most on their car repairs:<ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li>London - £1,796</li><li>Oxford - £1,587</li><li>Bristol - £1,267</li><li>Birmingham - £1,112</li><li>Exeter - £1,098</li></ul>Meanwhile, the cities which reported the lowest repair costs were found to be Liverpool (£37), Newcastle (£61) and Cardiff (£85).The survey also asked respondents what repairs they needed to pay for over the past year. The most common answers were:<ul style="list-style-type:disc;"><li>Tyre replacement - 62%</li><li>Brake repairs - 52%</li><li>Windscreen repair/replacement - 43%</li><li>Wheel alignment - 29%</li><li>Spark plug replacement - 20%</li></ul>Interestingly, drivers in the South West were more likely to need tyres replaced that the rest of the country, with 73% saying they needed this repair done.
